Capcom veteran Hideki Kamiya is losing sleep over his fear of Resident Evil Requiem
Hideki Kamiya, the director of Resident Evil 2, recently proposed that Capcom should consider adding a “non-scary mode” to its well-known horror franchise. Kamiya, who has expressed his disdain for horror games, made these remarks while having a good time playing Resident Evil Requiem with colleagues from his studio, Clover.
As the discussion unfolded, one team member pointed out that such a mode might undermine the essence of the games. In response, Kamiya lightheartedly stated, “I just want to enjoy the puzzles and combat without the frightening elements.” He also commented on the more mature appearance of Leon Kennedy in Requiem, indicating that he’s no longer the young hero he once was.
This amusing moment offers a glimpse into life at Clover, revealing that even the creator of Resident Evil 2 has a bit of a timid side. Kamiya has previously vocalized his aversion to horror, and he humorously suggested that the game could feature a “not scary mode,” where zombies transform into cute characters, blood splatters become cherry blossom petals, and the soundtrack shifts to light-hearted, upbeat music, allowing players to focus on solving puzzles and enjoying battles without the fear factor.
<pIn a recent post about a new story expansion for Resident Evil Requiem, Kamiya expressed his enthusiasm for the game but admitted, "It's so scary that I can't sleep alone at night anymore, so I just can't bring myself to play… Consider how others feel in that situation."
This concept certainly brings a smile to my face. While I appreciate Resident Evil Requiem in its current form, the idea of witnessing cherry blossom petals burst from a zombie’s head during a chainsaw encounter is quite entertaining.
Earlier this month, Capcom announced that Resident Evil Requiem had sold over 5 million copies within its first week, a well-deserved achievement. It received a five-star review, with one critic labeling it as “a brilliant combination of intense horror and a nostalgic celebration for the iconic series.” Following its launch, Requiem achieved the highest concurrent player count on Steam for any Resident Evil title.
As for Kamiya and Clover, the team is actively developing a sequel to Okami.
