The latest entry in Ubisoft’s blockbuster franchise, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has received a “very positive” rating on Steam based on 751 user reviews, 80% of which were positive, about four hours after its launch on the game distribution platform, reported by Reuters.
The twice-delayed release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set in rural Japan, is Ubisoft‘s first major game debut since the muted reception of Star Wars Outlaws last August. Its launch could be seen as a “decisive moment” for the French video game maker, which has been struggling with falling profits, a slumping share price and takeover speculation.
Sony PlayStation Store
Ubisoft shares were up 3.4% as of 08:29 GMT. On Thursday, the game topped Steam’s list of best-selling games worldwide, with the number of concurrent players on the platform peaking at 25,863 in its first hours of play. On Sony’s PlayStation Store, where the adventure game launched at midnight, the latest “Assassin’s Creed” received a user rating of 4.79 out of five stars based on 1,834 reviews. The PC version scored 78 out of 100 on Metacritic after 45 reviews from critics, the PlayStation 5 version scored 81 based on 78 reviews, and the Xbox Series X version scored 85 based on 20 reviews.
In positive user reviews on Steam, players praised the game’s “beautiful graphics,” detailed environments, and gameplay. Some described the game as “better than expected” and said they enjoyed the story. Negative reviews cited some bugs and glitches during launch, and some said the story lacked a “good foundation.” Some players also said the game was overshadowed by Sucker Punch Productions’ critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, which is set in a similar setting.

Ghost of Tsushima
Ghost of Tsushima, an open-world action-adventure game that debuted in 2020, received a critical score of 83 on Metacritic with a user rating of 9.2 out of 10. Assassin’s Creed Shadows will face competition from another game set in feudal Japan later this year, as Sucker Punch Productions plans to release Ghost of Yotei, a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.
