Can the ghost-hunting experience of Phasmophobia be adapted into a board game? Let’s discover the answer
A co-op ghost hunting experience, known as Phasmophobia, is making an unexpected transition into the world of board games.
Recently, a teaser video and images for this project have emerged, showcasing a game that features cardboard components, cards, and dice, designed for four players. Participants will construct a haunted location using tiles, populate it with various randomized items, draw Ghost Type cards from the Investigation Pile, and match them with a randomized evidence set to begin their adventure.
The game includes a Ghost Behavior board, which ensures that the ghost’s actions remain unpredictable throughout gameplay. As players’ sanity diminishes—mirroring the video game’s mechanics—the ghost’s aggressiveness increases. While it remains unclear how the essence of fear will be conveyed without the immersive visuals and audio of the video game, there is hope that the tension will carry over to this new format. Perhaps trying it out in a genuinely haunted location could heighten the experience?
The board game adaptation, titled Phasmophobia: The Board Game, is produced in partnership with Lost in Cult, a company renowned for creating unique physical editions of niche video games. This will mark their debut in the board game realm.
Pre-orders for the game are currently open, with an expected release in the fourth quarter of 2026. The standard edition of the board game will be priced at £80, while a deluxe edition—featuring glow-in-the-dark handprints and foil-backed cards, among other enhancements—will retail for £120.
Phasmophobia has achieved remarkable success as a video game, selling over 25 million copies and dramatically impacting the life of its solo developer, Daniel Knight.
