PUBG Creator Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene Is Set to Launch a Surprising New Game
Brendan Greene, the mind behind the hugely popular battle royale game PUBG, is on the verge of launching his latest project titled Prologue: Go Wayback! Set for early access on November 20th, this release marks the inaugural title from his new studio, PlayerUnknown Productions. However, this new game may not align with your typical expectations.
Prologue: Go Wayback! is devoid of any combat; it focuses entirely on survival elements, emphasizing navigation through dense forests and facing unpredictable weather conditions. One of the most intriguing aspects of the game is its technology—every level is procedurally generated, as is every event that occurs during gameplay.
This title is the first step toward a grand vision of creating entire, procedurally generated worlds. While Prologue serves as a realization of that ambition at the terrain level, it’s also designed for genuine gameplay instead of just being a technical showcase.
In the game, players rely on paper maps and a compass to traverse forest landscapes amidst challenging weather. You’ll transition from the safety of wooden cabins while avoiding harsh blizzards and downpours, all the while managing your character’s hunger, thirst, and body temperature. If you become too cold, you risk hypothermia. Prolonged wetness can lead to severe cold as well, with the added challenge of getting trapped in dynamically created swamps.
Players must interact with various elements like fuse boxes, generators, campfires, stovepots for cooking, and tools to repair the weathered cabins before the cold air can seep in. The game features a complex system of mechanics that are continuously evolving, making it an early access experience filled with ongoing updates.
While playing, I was struck by the overwhelming impact of the weather mechanics; they aren’t merely a backdrop but a central element that poses the only real threat in the game. This approach demonstrates a bold creative vision, especially for a game set to be released in 2025, which I find incredibly admirable.
Furthermore, I am captivated by the ambitious idea driving this project—the concept of expansive procedural generation. It’s a truly inspiring concept, and my conversation with Brendan Greene revealed just how grand his vision is. Stay tuned for further insights, as I’ll be sharing more details soon.
