Amazon sells one of its studios to Ubisoft after downsizing its video game division

Following Amazon’s recent decision to streamline its video game operations, resulting in significant job reductions, Ubisoft has taken a strategic step by acquiring the Amazon Games Montreal studio. This team is currently developing a new MOBA titled “March of Giants.”

According to Ubisoft’s official announcement, the acquisition grants them the rights to “March of Giants” and brings the talented Amazon Games Montreal group on board. This team includes Xavier Marquis, the former creative director of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, who transitioned to Amazon in 2021 after previously working at Ubisoft.

Ubisoft is particularly interested in “March of Giants” because they recognize the potential for continued growth within the global MOBA market, projecting that total revenues will roughly double by 2030. They believe this new title offers a unique approach that can captivate current MOBA enthusiasts, draw in new players, and evolve into a thriving competitive live game.

Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, expressed excitement about the acquisition in a statement. He emphasized that “March of Giants” has the potential to provide players with an innovative experience and position Ubisoft competitively in a significant segment of the gaming industry. He also welcomed back former staff members and highlighted the team’s shared ambition and creativity, aligning with Ubisoft’s goals for bold new gaming experiences.

While the specifics of the acquisition deal remain confidential, Ubisoft disclosed that Amazon will continue providing marketing support for “March of Giants” on Twitch.

The sale of Amazon Games Montreal follows a major shift in Amazon’s video game strategy, which took place last October during significant layoffs across the company. Reports indicated that Amazon made substantial cuts to its first-party AAA game development efforts, particularly affecting their MMO projects.

In the wake of this restructuring, it was announced that ongoing development of the New World MMO would be halted, and there were indications that plans for a Lord of the Rings MMO had also been scrapped.
