Megabonk receives a chilling update ahead of the holiday season, featuring a new map, character, and additional content

Spooky vibes can truly amplify the festive spirit, right? Even though there are certainly other aspects of the season that take precedence, for fans of Megabonk, the eerie atmosphere is what they’re looking forward to.

The much-anticipated “Spooky Update” for Megabonk, which was initially scheduled for a smaller launch around Halloween, ended up being expanded by solo developer Vedinad, who aimed to create something more substantial. Although this update arrived later than planned, fans can finally enjoy the new content.

This update not only resolves several bugs, such as the issue with Giant Fork’s Megacrit, but it also introduces a range of new features, including fresh items, a new character, and an additional map.

Below are the complete patch notes for the Spooky Update as detailed by Vedinad:

New Content

  • A brand-new map
  • Introduction of a new character
  • Fresh weapons
  • Various new items
  • New enemies and boss encounters
  • Added achievements and challenges

Game Enhancements

  • Significant performance improvements in the late game

Bug Fixes

  • Resolved the issue with the Giant Fork’s Megacrit
  • Fixed a problem allowing players to purchase items that were not yet unlocked
  • Addressed a bug where Frost Walker’s opacity reset when the attack speed was altered
  • Corrected the Holy Book’s interaction with Particle Opacity
  • Removed an erroneous text pop-up when microwaving items that have reached their maximum capacity, such as the Overpowered Lamp
  • Eliminated a bug that permitted players to utilize the full map during the Blind Challenge
  • Fixed a bug that allowed players to teleport to the next stage while retaining their progress
  • Resoled an error that occurred when players banished every item except one of a certain rarity before engaging with a specific character.

Settings Improvements

  • New Advanced Settings option, offering features typically unnecessary for most players—disabled by default to keep things user-friendly.
  • Shrine Counter—displays the available and used shrines.
  • [Advanced] Show HUD option—toggle the HUD’s visibility.
  • [Advanced] Option to skip chest animations; note that banning items from chests is unavailable with this setting active.
  • [Advanced] Portal Animation Skip—skips the portal spawn animation in stage 1.
  • [Advanced] Silver Pots—toggle the activation of silver pots (this would affect the Ghost Item in shambles).
  • [Advanced] Item Feed display—to show picked-up items at the left side of the screen.

Balancing Updates

  • Worked on fixing the “caveman” bug/exploit that allowed players to hide in caves where enemies couldn’t spawn or reach them.
  • Increased the minimum reward potential for Diceheads passive abilities from 0.02 to 0.04, doubling the late-level-up rewards without making them overpowering.
  • Chunkers now commence with an additional projectile.
  • Amog’s Passive now expands in radius with each level, increasing from 4 to 12 over 220 levels, along with a 1% boost in Poison Damage per level.
  • Calcium’s passive adjustments will reduce momentum loss on damage from 50% to about 25%, decreasing less as you level up.
  • Cursed grabbies now have a limit of 250 procs per tick to enhance performance; other similar items adhere to similar limits for consistency.
  • Projectile speed of Poison Flask has risen from 12 to 16.
  • Dragon’s Breath will now rotate 200% faster and automatically target enemies instead of following player rotation. The damage and duration have also been increased.
  • Noelle’s passive size increase per level is reduced, and her damage per frozen enemy has been slightly lessened.
  • Final Swarm’s maximum Silver Multiplier has shifted from 16x to 8x due to an overabundance of silver among players.
  • In response to the flying meta, Final Swarm specters will speed up after the 20-minute mark, and starting at this time, enemy CC caps will gradually decrease.

Console Access

  • Pressing F10 opens the console.
  • This feature is currently mainly used for setting specific dungeon seeds for speedrunning.
  • Type “help” in the console for a list of commands and their usage.

The action-packed roguelike Megabonk recently gained attention when its developer, Vedinad, withdrew from consideration for The Game Awards, citing that Megabonk wasn’t their debut title, as they had developed games under different studio names for several years prior.
