Interested in a new Lord of the Rings RTS? This Total War: Attila mod has increased the game’s popularity

The player base for Total War: Attila has recently experienced a significant increase due to the 1.0 launch of an ambitious modification that transforms the game into a grand strategy set within the Lord of the Rings universe. This mod, known as The Dawnless Days, has resulted in the highest number of concurrent players for Attila in nearly ten years.

The Dawnless Days mod, available for download on Nexus Mods, introduces an extensive War of the Ring campaign on a specially designed map of Middle-Earth. It features numerous playable factions that align with the lore and includes key locations from J.R.R. Tolkien’s narratives. At the moment, Eriador remains uncompleted and non-playable, but the development team is actively working on improvements!

According to statistics from SteamDB, Total War: Attila has reached a peak of 11,248 concurrent players in the past 24 hours. This marks the highest player count since 2016, when it briefly surged during a Sega strategy game bundle. For the mod to break the all-time record, it would need to exceed 26,346 concurrent players achieved at the time of the game’s original launch.

The Dawnless Days mod was first released on Nexus Mods in June 2020 and has been continuously updated ever since. The development team is currently seeking 2D artists, 3D modelers, and animators, as stated in a recent announcement on the modding platform. Notably, they have emphasized that they will not accept donations, likely to avoid any copyright issues and potential takedowns.

While Attila seems to be experiencing a revival akin to Gandalf’s return, Creative Assembly is also forging ahead with new titles in the Total War series. Recently, they unveiled Nagash as the newest lord added to Total War: Warhammer 3, alongside the announcement of Total War: Medieval 3 during their 25th anniversary stream. Additionally, the reveal of Total War: Warhammer 40,000 at The Game Awards generated considerable buzz.
