Hideo Kojima Interviews Himself and the Duffer Brothers, Creators of Stranger Things (But Not Together)
Hideo Kojima recently participated in Wired’s engaging Tech Support series, where he primarily discussed his creative process and personal insights.
While previous episodes have showcased various game developers, this interview focused solely on Kojima, elaborating on his approach to writing, developing, and evaluating his video games.
During the conversation, Kojima emphasized the significance of players feeling “the creator’s love” in games and encouraged them to explore creatively. He shared his passion for film, his vision for the future of gaming, and his aspiration to create immersive worlds that entice players to linger longer.
Kojima mentioned he relies on extensive personal research rather than consulting experts in fields such as science and history. He dedicates time daily to studying literature, watching documentaries, and browsing both online resources and libraries.
In a humorous moment, he invited anyone interested in becoming his assistant to reach out to him.
Additionally, he provided intriguing insights into his game-testing process, detailing how he meticulously adjusts elements such as audio balance and difficulty levels, and addresses storytelling pacing challenges. “It’s a very crucial stage,” he noted, adding that not many developers invest the same effort.
Recently, Kojima also appeared on Netflix Japan, where he interviewed the Duffer Brothers, creators of Stranger Things, at what appeared to be his studio. The brothers expressed their admiration for Japanese culture and how games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill influenced their work, particularly regarding the aesthetic of the Upside Down. While discussing various inspirations, they acknowledged Metal Gear Solid, likely reflecting Kojima’s presence during the interview.
They remarked that these games, along with classics from directors like John Carpenter and Steven Spielberg, played a pivotal role in shaping their creative vision.
