The end of Anthem is approaching – just days left before EA shuts down the servers for BioWare’s troubled multiplayer title
Time is running out for players of BioWare’s multiplayer game, Anthem, with just 10 days remaining before the servers are shut down indefinitely. This shutdown follows an announcement made by EA last summer regarding the game’s end date, set for January 12, 2026. What seemed like a distant deadline has now approached swiftly.
Currently, it remains uncertain whether there will be any special event to mark the game’s closure.
As Anthem relies solely on online multiplayer functionality, the impending server shutdown means that players will lose access to the game entirely, regardless of ownership status. This dilemma has sparked frustration among gamers who feel cheated out of experiences they’ve paid for, leading to movements advocating for the protection of digital games.
When a game fails to maintain a sufficient player base to cover server maintenance costs, companies are faced with a dilemma: continue at a loss or allow the community to manage private servers. However, the latter option involves complexities that are not easily resolved.
The conclusion of Anthem represents a significant moment for BioWare, a studio known for its single-player RPGs, which was pressured into developing a multiplayer title that ultimately fell short of expectations. The project has often been described as a “dichotomy,” striving to fulfill dual identities as both a BioWare game and a multiplayer experience but failing to deliver on either front. One review even characterized Anthem as having been torn apart by its own identity crisis.
Plans were once in place for an ambitious overhaul dubbed Anthem 2.0, which aimed to rejuvenate the game, but these plans were ultimately scrapped.
Anthem’s challenges built upon the setbacks experienced by Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017, placing BioWare in a vulnerable position following the success of Dragon Age: Inquisition in 2014. The anticipated release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024, after a tumultuous decade of development, which included a phase as a multiplayer title, has done little to alleviate these pressures.
Looking ahead, all attention is on the development of the next Mass Effect, a project that may determine the future stability of BioWare. However, with EA’s recent acquisition of a sports-focused entity in Saudi Arabia nearing completion, there is uncertainty regarding the direction and priorities of the new leadership.
