Underrated ‘slow life RPG’ Fantasy Life i receives a surprise roguelike mode in its New Year update

The often-overlooked ‘slow life’ RPG, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, which captivated me last year on the Switch 2, has just launched an exciting update for the new year.

Titled Sinister Broker Bazario’s Schemes, this free update is now available across all platforms including PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch. It introduces a new area called Snoozaland, transforming Fantasy Life i into a roguelike adventure where players have just one life and one chance to progress as far as they can.

In Snoozaland, you begin each run as a basic level one character with no gear, and the terrain shifts every time you try again. As you navigate this world, you’ll discover various lives—essentially the game’s job and class system—and gather equipment along the way.

Players can anticipate battling a formidable end-boss and claiming substantial rewards. Within the zone, you’ll also encounter alchemy robots that can produce powerful items—provided you feed them enough unwanted materials and gear first.

The game’s official site suggests that Snoozaland offers a standalone experience, indicating that the character progression made during your time there is temporary, with no lasting effects beyond each attempt.

Personally, I found Fantasy Life i to be one of the most enchanting launch games for the Switch 2. It blends elements of town building, resource gathering, and crafting with engaging RPG mechanics, reminiscent of both Animal Crossing and Dragon Quest. The game is vibrant, cheerful, and incredibly enjoyable.
