US Senate passes bill to ban TikTok
The U.S. Senate has supported the law banning TikTok. The company believes that this bill violates its rights and will challenge it in court.
US Senate passes bill to ban TikTok
Over the weekend, the US House of Representatives passed a bill to ban TikTok. On Tuesday, the Senate supported the bill, and today President Joe Biden is expected to sign it into law. According to the new law, TikTok will be banned if its owner ByteDance does not sell it by the end of this year.
This bill did not appear out of thin air. Government officials are convinced that China can obtain personal data of TikTok users and spread propaganda on the social network. Such actions pose a direct threat to US security.
It is noteworthy that in March, the House of Representatives already passed a similar bill to ban TikTok or force its sale. However, the Senate did not pass it then.
TikTok representatives did not immediately respond to this statement and refrained from commenting. The only one who has spoken out so far is Michael Beckerman, the company’s head of public policy in America. He said that such actions are an unprecedented violation of rights and freedoms, so TikTok plans to challenge the bill in court.
Currently, ByteDance has 9 months and 90 days to sell TikTok.
