Ubisoft finally confirms its worst-kept secret with the unveiling of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced artwork

Three years after initial rumors about a remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag emerged, Ubisoft has finally confirmed what’s been widely speculated.

The talk of a remake began in 2023, suggesting that the acclaimed 2013 open-world pirate adventure was being revitalized by Ubisoft Singapore, the team behind Skull and Bones. Initially, it was reported that the remake was still several years away. After a period of silence, actor Matt Ryan, who portrayed the game’s key character Edward Kenway, hinted at a possible release, which led to Ubisoft warning him about legal repercussions.

As anticipation grew, hints of the project began to surface. In December, a listing titled Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced appeared briefly on the PEGI website. The following month, a collectible figure of Kenway on a treasure chest leaked. Additionally, snippets of Black Flag sea shanties were spotted on Ubisoft’s official YouTube channel, and there were various social media interactions from Ubisoft acknowledging the excitement around Black Flag, along with sightings of art books related to the game.

In a recent blog entry detailing the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Jean Guesdon, Ubisoft’s head of franchise, confirmed the rumors, noting, “Speculation about Assassin’s Creed is common, but it’s important to clarify: ‘Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.’ However, some rumors hold more weight. Keep your eyes peeled.” Accompanying this announcement was new artwork of Kenway, featuring the Black Flag Resynced logo. While there’s no specific release date yet, further details are anticipated soon.

In addition to the Black Flag news, Ubisoft stated that last year’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows is entering its final phase, with updates becoming less frequent but still containing a few surprises. Attention is also shifting towards Assassin’s Creed Hexe, described as a “darker, narrative-driven” experience set in 16th-century Europe. Initially expected to release in 2026, Guesdon mentioned that the team is taking extra time to fulfill their ambitious vision, which may delay updates.

Guesdon also addressed Codename Invictus, a new PvP multiplayer installment being developed by veterans from For Honor. He acknowledged the curiosity surrounding this project, confirming it would take a fresh approach to multiplayer gameplay within the franchise, but not entirely as some rumors have suggested. The goal is to gather community feedback early in the development process.

Additionally, there was mention of Codename Jade, a mobile collaboration with Tencent, as well as several other projects at various stages of development, with hints at the return of cooperative gameplay in future titles and references to a canceled game that will inform their strategy moving forward.

To conclude, announcements regarding Netflix’s live-action Assassin’s Creed series are expected soon, and fans of Assassin’s Creed Unity can look forward to a free update for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 that adds 60fps support tomorrow, March 5th, which should serve as a nice diversion until the Black Flag remake is released.
