Koei Tecmo collaborates with SpiralAI to explore the creation of “experiences that merge entertainment and AI” through chatbot-style LLMs

In a new development within the tech and entertainment sector, Koei Tecmo has made headlines by announcing a partnership with SpiralAI, coinciding with the introduction of their advanced large language model, Geppetto2.

This initiative marks the establishment of a strategic alliance between Koei Tecmo, a prominent player in the gaming industry, and SpiralAI, a startup founded in 2023, known for its expertise in crafting character-driven conversational AI. Although conversational AI has gained popularity recently, the underlying technology of large language models has been around for considerably longer.

Geppetto2 is characterized as a model tailored for the entertainment industry, specifically aimed at enhancing interactions in video games. Its design intends to facilitate “natural and true-to-character” dialogues between players and in-game characters, ensuring that conversations align with established backstories and the overall narrative of the game, while also striving to minimize inaccuracies or “hallucinations.” However, it’s essential to note that even with this promising framework, there’s no guarantee that the end product will perform flawlessly.

Hisashi Koinuma, the CEO of Koei Tecmo, expressed the company’s commitment to investing in AI technologies to explore new entertainment possibilities. While no detailed plans have been disclosed, the mere announcement is likely to positively influence the company’s stock value, reflecting investor interest.

This move is reminiscent of previous attempts in the industry, such as Ubisoft’s introduction of generative AI for creating “NEO NPCs” two years ago, followed by similar innovations from Nvidia. While the integration of such technologies appears to be a trend, the true effectiveness and transformative impact on gaming remain to be seen.
