Slay the Spire 2’s highly successful launch prompted the studio to apologize for a joke about Marathon that has now come off as more hurtful than intended
Casey Yano, co-founder of Mega Crit and developer of the acclaimed indie game Slay the Spire 2, acknowledged that a congratulatory post directed at the Marathon development team might have come off as more cutting than intended. The team had not anticipated that Slay the Spire 2 would outpace Bungie’s new extraction shooter in terms of concurrent players on Steam.
Both games launched on Steam simultaneously, creating a friendly rivalry between the two. In a lighthearted gesture, the Mega Crit X account humorously remarked: “Kudos to the Marathon team on their release! Don’t let small indie passion projects like this overshadow your momentum just because Slay the Spire 2 is out.”
Interestingly, the impact of indie games should not be underestimated. On the launch day, Marathon attracted an impressive peak of 88,337 concurrent players. In stark contrast, Slay the Spire 2 achieved a remarkable 430,456 concurrent players. It’s important to note that Slay the Spire 2 is exclusively available on PC, while Marathon is catering to both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S audiences, adding a humorous layer to their competition.
Reflecting on the playful comment, Yano shared on their personal social media: “This seems a bit meaner than it was intended… To be fair, I didn’t think we’d actually surpass Marathon in concurrent players.”
The success of Mega Crit and Slay the Spire is a remarkable narrative. The original game has created a passionate fanbase over the years, and this strong word-of-mouth has led to a spectacular release amidst a crowded month of significant game launches. The industry remains highly competitive for developers today, but indie games consistently demonstrate an ability to make a powerful impact.
