Discord assures developers support and announces “additional protections” after finding an Arc Raiders bug that saved users’ private messages
Discord has addressed a recent security concern linked to the Arc Raiders game and its integration with the platform, which led to users’ private Discord messages being stored on their local machines.
Developers at Embark Studios have promptly issued a hotfix to rectify the situation. A Discord representative mentioned, “We recently identified an issue affecting certain Arc Raiders players, relating to debugging features used for developing and testing game integrations with our Social SDK.”
This issue resulted in the storage of some players’ Discord information locally, requiring physical access to the device to view the logs. Embark has corrected the issue, and we’re enhancing the Social SDK to ensure additional safeguards are in place for developers.
Timothy Meadows, who initially highlighted the problem, pointed out that the log files containing these messages might inadvertently be included in bug reports or accessed by other applications with permissions to read device files. Discord became aware of the issue on March 4th and collaborated closely with Embark Studios to resolve it swiftly.
Moving forward, Discord is updating its Social SDK and providing clearer guidance for developers to avoid similar incidents. The problem stemmed from the debug logging features in the Social SDK, which create extra logs when developers utilize elevated logging settings during testing.
In his original blog post, Meadows urged users who had enabled the Discord integration with Arc Raiders to change their passwords immediately and deactivate the integration. With the issue now corrected and stronger protections implemented, there is optimism that this type of security concern regarding Discord integrations will be a thing of the past.
