Xbox CEO reveals that Microsoft’s upcoming console, Project Helix, will support both “your Xbox and PC games” while “leading in performance
Xbox has provided an important update concerning its upcoming console, currently referred to by the code name Project Helix. Microsoft’s newly appointed gaming CEO, Asha Sharma, has confirmed that this next-generation system will not only support Xbox titles but will also enable users to play PC games. Sharma emphasized that Project Helix is set to “lead in performance” as a result of this capability.
In her social media post, Sharma expressed enthusiasm about the discussions held with Team Xbox regarding their dedication to reviving the Xbox brand, including Project Helix. She noted that this new console aims to excel in performance and offer the flexibility to play both Xbox and PC games.
Speculation regarding the integration of PC gaming into the Xbox platform has circulated since last year, suggesting an evolution in Xbox’s capabilities, potentially allowing access to games available on PC platforms, such as Steam. However, the specifics of which PC games will be playable on Project Helix weren’t detailed by Sharma. It is important to note that many new Xbox titles are already developed with cross-platform availability in mind, so it’s possible that this is what she was indicating.
Additionally, the recent introduction of Xbox’s ROG handheld device, which supports both Xbox and Steam games, showcases the merging of console and PC gaming environments.
Last year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella articulated the company’s future direction, mentioning Steam as a competing platform and reaffirming Microsoft’s role as a leading video game publisher. He remarked on the misconception of viewing consoles and PCs as entirely separate entities, sharing insights into Microsoft’s aim of enhancing gaming through console technology.
Asha Sharma ascended to her position recently as Phil Spencer announced his retirement after a long tenure with the company. This transition has attracted attention, especially with Sarah Bond also departing Xbox during this time, leading to considerations about the future direction of the console brand.
Stay tuned for more updates on Sharma’s new role and its impact on Xbox’s strategies moving forward.
