Marathon vows to steer clear of anxiety-inducing battle passes and assures “no pay-for-power” microtransactions

Bungie has unveiled new details regarding the seasonal reward passes for Marathon. Unlike the conventional approach where seasonal passes are removed as new seasons start, these passes will remain available permanently in a model akin to that of Helldivers 2 and Halo: Infinite.

This information was shared through Marathon’s social media platforms, highlighting that there will be “no pay-to-win” dynamics within the game. Players can earn premium rewards from these passes, while monetized elements will be limited to cosmetic items purchased with real money. Notably, the passes are designed to be timeless, thus allowing players to enjoy the game without the fear of missing out.

To unlock rewards from the premium passes, players will use a currency called Silk, which is exclusively earned through gameplay and cannot be acquired with real-world money. In addition, a different premium currency known as Lux is available for purchasing various cosmetic items.

For those who prefer not to engage with the seasonal model, Marathon also offers a selection of unlockable cosmetics through the Codex. This feature acts as a challenge hub, allowing players to complete specific tasks, such as achieving a notable feat with their favorite weapon to earn new skins.

The significance of this approach is that it deviates from the norm seen in many live service games that typically rotate seasonal passes in order to maintain player engagement. By adopting this different strategy, Bungie is prioritizing consumer-friendly practices over the traditional methods of keeping players continually logging in.

Marathon, which recently received an official age rating for PS4 and Xbox One, will be released globally later today. The game also boasts an eight-minute launch cinematic that has added excitement ahead of its debut, following a successful Server Slam event last weekend that garnered attention from extraction shooter enthusiasts.
