Game Composer Discusses Todd Howard’s Vision and How People Weren’t Prepared for Starfield

Inon Zur, a composer who has worked collaboratively with Bethesda for many years, has shared insights about his extensive experience with the company. He reflected on Bethesda’s visionary leader, Todd Howard, and his views on the mixed reception of the 2023 space-themed game, Starfield.

Zur’s impressive portfolio includes scores for notable franchises such as Dragon Age, Crysis, Prince of Persia, and Starcraft. He has been a significant contributor to several Bethesda titles, including various Fallout games and Starfield. In a recent interview, Zur discussed the creative dynamics within the studio, explaining that while the team provides guidance for each project, they also grant him the freedom to exercise his creativity, as they have a deep understanding of his style.

Speaking highly of Todd Howard, Zur said, “Todd is one of the most creative and dynamic figures in the industry. He never ceases to generate new ideas and has a clear vision of what he wants. He possesses a remarkable ability to articulate his ideas without necessarily labeling them, allowing for creative freedom while still steering the project toward his vision. He truly is a visionary who anticipates trends long before they become mainstream.”

Regarding Starfield, which faced a polarized response upon its release, Zur expressed belief that audiences may not have been fully prepared for its innovative approach. He recounted Howard’s confidence in the project, noting, “He suggested that if some people didn’t resonate with it, that was okay—this is the direction we’re taking, and we’re committed to it.” Zur emphasized Howard’s consistent track record of eventually winning over skeptics with his vision.

“It often takes time for the brilliance of big visionaries to be acknowledged,” he remarked. “There are moments when their ideas may not be immediately understood, but their determination ensures that they stay true to their course. I have every confidence that Starfield will achieve legendary status; it’s only a matter of time.”

In addition to his thoughts on Starfield, Zur elaborated on his general approach to composing for video games and shared his opinions on the current landscape of game soundtracks. Following the release of last year’s Shattered Space DLC for Starfield, there are rumors of upcoming content for the game. However, specifics remain unclear, and Howard has attempted to temper expectations by clarifying that while Bethesda is developing extensive new material for Starfield, it does not equate to a complete overhaul or a sequel.
