Marathon’s initial update enhances ammunition and medical supplies, increases combat noise, reduces the effectiveness of thermal scopes, and adjusts UESC bots

While the player count for Marathon on PC may not have met the expectations set by Sony and Bungie, nearly a week into its live-service debut, the overall feedback has been quite favorable, and it’s a game we genuinely enjoy. The first update has now been released.

Aside from the typical challenges found in a well-crafted online shooter, devoted fans of Marathon have been busy deciphering the ‘terminal puzzle,’ which appears to hint at the upcoming launch of Marathon’s inaugural endgame region: the Cryo Archive. This new area is expected to significantly elevate the excitement for the game’s first season, but prior to that, the initial patch brings essential bug fixes and balance adjustments to ensure a smoother experience.

Update 1.0.0.4 introduces several noteworthy changes that are likely to spark conversations within the community in the hours and days ahead. Bungie is primarily focused on easing some of the more frustrating aspects of gameplay while increasing the intensity of long-range gunfights (which will now carry a higher noise level) involving other Runners or UESC forces.

Med Cabinets and Munitions Crates will have increased spawn rates in the Perimeter area (the initial low-risk zone where players begin their Tau Ceti IV adventure), and the starting ammunition for the sponsored MIDA, CyberAcme, and Arachne free kits is also set to rise. This enhancement will provide all players, especially newcomers, a better chance in combat when resources are scarce. Conversely, competitive players utilizing thermal scopes will notice a reduction in their overall effectiveness, as they quickly became a dominant strategy.

Additionally, UESC bots are experiencing a slight nerf, as Bungie strives to find the ideal balance in interactions between Runner teams and the sometimes overwhelming patrols and assault forces. This adjustment is a response to the frustrations expressed by players, including prominent streamer Ninja, who had to step away from the game on launch day. The health points of these bots are being reduced “by a small amount.” However, the developers acknowledge the largely positive reception to AI enemies that pose a genuine threat rather than being easy targets.

Other minor but beneficial adjustments include the visibility range for navigation points, which now appear from 20 meters instead of 10. Fixes have also been made to server and client crashes, as well as prolonged black screens during map loading—issues that players, including myself, have encountered since launch. The Lux bundle is also receiving a slight enhancement as promised.

The patch released on March 11 followed Bungie’s response to user feedback concerning the lack of value in the initial rewards pass. A mid-April update for the paid Season 1 pass will introduce new Shell and weapon skins, and players can preview the upcoming cosmetics soon.
