Nintendo Switch sets sales records in Japan
The cumulative sales of Nintendo Switch in Japan have surpassed 32.9 million units, as announced by Famitsu analysts. The portable console has set a new sales record, surpassing the previous champion, Nintendo DS, with sales of 32.8 million units. According to reports from Nikkei newspaper, a total of 139 million Switch units were sold in 2023, making it the third most popular gaming device in the world throughout the history of gaming consoles.
This success has also led to a significant increase in Nintendo’s market capitalization, which has tripled since the launch of Switch. The company has reported a record net profit in the fiscal year 2023-2024, amounting to $3.2 billion, surpassing the previous record of $3.06 billion.
A surprise for fans came with the news of the release of a new version of the Switch not before March 2025. While many experts expected the console to be released in 2024, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa explained that the company needs more time to prepare to avoid a deficit similar to what occurred after the launch of the original Switch. It is expected that the company will announce the new console by the end of the current fiscal year.
