Hazelight Studios’ recently launched co-op action-adventure game Split Fiction has already had a hugely successful start, and major milestones continue to pile up as preparations for a full-length film adaptation of the game are now underway, reported by GameRant. Split Fiction has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audiences, and the fantastical sci-fi adventure is looking to make its way to screens quickly.

Releasing on March 6th, Split Fiction sees players take on the co-op roles of Mio and Zoe, two writers who are thrown into a surreal simulation of their most daring stories. Players are tasked with working together to overcome a series of challenges and enemies, as well as learning more about the two main characters and the journeys that led them to where they are today.

A string of film and TV adaptations of video games have been successful in recent years, and it would seem that the initial high ratings for Split Fiction are promising enough to prompt a jump to Hollywood. Media company Story Kitchen is currently assembling a cast, writers, and director for a film adaptation of Split Fiction. Story Kitchen is pitching the teams as a “package deal,” with offers for the film rights “coming in from several major Hollywood studios.” The game itself features split-screen co-op gameplay and transitions between medieval high fantasy and futuristic sci-fi, and many fans are already crossing their fingers that the current bidding war will lead to a big-budget adaptation.

There are currently no details on whether the adaptation will be live-action or animated, leaving viewers to speculate whether Split Fiction could be the next Super Mario Bros. movie, or if it will follow a similar path to The Last of Us and Fallout. In addition to Split Fiction, several other major video game and franchises are already in the process of achieving blockbuster status. Sony has previously announced live-action adaptations of Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2, as well as an anime-style TV series for Ghost of Tsushima. Minecraft and Until Dawn are currently scheduled for release in April, and a brand new Silent Hill film called Return to Silent Hill is currently in post-production ahead of an unannounced theatrical release in 2025.

Producers and Studios Interested in Split Fiction

How quickly a producer or distributor will get involved with Split Fiction remains to be seen, but if the adaptation becomes as popular as the game, it could be a major achievement for Hazelight Studios. The growing success of Split Fiction bodes well for the cinematic experience, although viewers may want to temper their expectations as pre-production, principal photography, and post-production can take years to fully wrap up. As such, interested fans will want to stay tuned for updates on the status of Split Fiction and other exciting updates regarding Hazelight’s upcoming projects.
