According to a statement from developers at Firaxis Games, the next update to Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 will bring a number of useful changes and quality of life improvements. Civilization 7 is the latest in a long-running series of turn-based strategy games about empire building, GameRant has reported.

Often considered one of the pioneers of strategy games, Sid Meier’s Civilization series continues to make waves with each new installment. In fact, the Civilization games are so influential and satisfying that many of the games in the series end up competing with each other. Many consider Civilization 4 to be one of the best 4X strategies of all time and use it as a yardstick against which to compare past and current releases.

Civilization 7 Age

Civilization 7 is no stranger to this trend, and its major changes to the typical Civ session have garnered a lot of attention since its release in February 2025. In light of this review and a number of complaints from fans, Firaxis Games Creative Director Ed Beach has released a video preview of the changes coming with the game’s next update, version 1.1.1. The preview, released just a day before the update’s release on March 26, 2025, explains the idea behind some of the planned additions to the patch. Most of the changes will focus on improving the game’s quality of life, making it more user-friendly for existing Civilization 7 players.

Some new balance adjustments will also address an issue with the Civilization 7 Age system, which changes the flow of the campaign in a way that even longtime fans of the series will perceive as a major departure from tradition. The Civilization 7 version 1.1.1 update focuses on improving the player experience. The most obvious new addition is “Fast Travel,” a highly requested feature that allows units to instantly move to where they’re going, significantly speeding up sessions. Other speed-related updates will include the addition of a “Restart Game” button that will restart the map with the same faction and leader selection for players who want to optimize their starting position by flipping the Civilization 7 map.

Map-related update

Another map-related update will add options to control the game’s map generation algorithm. The default behavior, which allows for creative asymmetry in starting circumstances, will be called “Standard.” A new “Balanced” option will favor a more even distribution of resources, territory, and opportunities for each Civilization 7 faction on the map to ensure a level playing field in multiplayer sessions. Another notable change will make the Modern Era last longer before transitioning due to the increased cost of its Techs and Civics.

The online reaction to the 1.1.1 preview was generally positive, with many players on Twitter, Bluesky, and Reddit praising Firaxis for its detailed communication of the upcoming update. While some players complained that some issues still needed to be addressed, most reactions expressed confidence that over time Firaxis would improve Civilization 7 and refine the experience to best meet fans’ desires.
