Researcher DFC Intelligence has cut its global 2025 forecast for sales of Nintendo Co.’s upcoming Switch 2 game console, citing uncertainty over tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, Bloomberg has reported. The gaming and digital media company now expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 units this year, down from a previous forecast of 17 million.
The forecast would still make the Switch 2 the fastest-selling game console of all time, but it reflects the broader uncertainty that Trump’s tariffs have caused across industries. Nintendo shares fell 4.3% in Tokyo on Wednesday morning. The Nikkei 225 index fell 4%. Last week, Nintendo announced an indefinite delay in accepting pre-orders in the U.S. due to Trump’s announcement that includes a 46% tariff on goods from Vietnam, where many Switch consoles are made.
Nintendo delays pre-orders
Nintendo said it is delaying pre-orders for the new Switch 2 in the U.S. due to concerns about the impact of global import tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Pre-orders for the new device in the U.S. will not begin on April 9 as originally planned, a Nintendo spokesperson said Friday, “to assess the potential impact of tariffs and changing market conditions.” Nintendo said it is sticking to its original launch date of June 5, when the Switch 2 will go on sale for $450. The company has not yet set a new pre-order date.
Nintendo, based in Kyoto, Japan, unveiled the Switch 2 earlier this week, the same day that Trump announced global tariffs, including a 24% tariff on Japan and a 46% tariff on Vietnam, where the company has been increasingly moving production. Nintendo shares traded in the U.S. fell 5.4% in afternoon trading in New York.

Nintendo Moves Production to Vietnam
If prices rise significantly due to tariffs, a significant portion of potential buyers are likely to hold off buying until prices drop. Over the weekend, Vietnam offered to lift all tariffs against the U.S. Nintendo moved production to Vietnam from China due to Trump’s trade war with Beijing during his first administration. Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 last week, saying it would go on sale on June 5 for $450. It’s a larger, more powerful version of the original Switch, with a first-year lineup of games, including new Mario Kart and Metroid.
According to a letter from the Communist Party of Vietnam dated April 5, Vietnam has proposed eliminating all tariffs on U.S. imports after President Donald Trump announced a 46% tariff on the Southeast Asian country. The proposal was made by party leader Tho Lam to Trump in a letter seen by Bloomberg. Lam asked that the U.S. not impose any additional tariffs or levies on Vietnamese goods and asked for the tariff announced by Trump last week to be delayed by at least 45 days after April 9.
