Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 have been rated by the Australian Classification Board. The organization is part of the country’s government and oversees the classification and rating of media and games, and fans of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and 3 are excited that the current rating likely indicates that Activision Blizzard is planning to re-release the original 2009 and 2011 versions of the games, possibly with online play support, GameRant has reported.

Earlier in February, rumors circulated that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would join Game Pass. Excited fans were quick to recall the iconic multiplayer game MW2, as when Activision launched the updated version in 2020, one of the main complaints was the exclusion of multiplayer. Of course, the fanbase was hoping that if the rumors were true and the game was coming to Game Pass, the company would take the opportunity to revive online PvP matches. Now, the ratings for MW2 and MW3 that have surfaced in Australia could be a sign that their hopes are about to come true.

MW2 and MW3 could be coming to next-gen consoles

As reported by Insider Gaming, the Australian Classification Board released two MA 15+ ratings on April 3, 2025: one for the PlayStation 5 version of Modern Warfare 2 and the other for the standard next-gen version of Modern Warfare 3 . Both games are labeled as Activision Blizzard productions, with 2025 listed as the “production year.” Notably, the MW3 rating also mentions “in-game purchases,” lending weight to the rumors of online support.

In 2024, a fan attempted to add multiplayer to the remastered edition of MW2 . The mod, known as H2M, was supposed to use the 2020 game’s assets to allow players to participate in online matches. However, Activision issued the modder a cease and desist order, angering the community. It seems the company has long recognized the business potential in updating the functionality of classic games without completely remastering or remaking them, as it has apparently been working on porting the two to current-gen consoles.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 in development for Xbox

The rumors of MW2 and MW3 re-releases weren’t the only encouraging news for CoD players. Earlier in March 2025, it was reported that Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 was in development for the next-gen Xbox. Some leaks that surfaced at the time also pointed to 2026 as the game’s rumored launch date, with the possibility that it would be the launch title for Microsoft’s upcoming console. However, it’s important to note that Activision has not commented on these recent statements, so fans have no choice but to wait for an official reveal.
