Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release date impacts more games than you realize

Hollow Knight: Silksong release date reaffirmed for 2025

Have you heard about the game Hollow Knight: Silksong? It’s not a surprise if you have, especially with the buzz surrounding it during Gamescom week. After years of anticipation, this highly-anticipated sequel finally received a launch date, and the gaming community responded with enthusiasm. The lines to try out Silksong at Gamescom were massive. September 4th is a date worth remembering.

However, the announcement wasn’t universally welcomed. Revealing the release date so late in the game’s development, just two weeks before the launch, has complicated matters for other titles already slated for early September. Developers are faced with a tough decision: should they stick to their original date and compete with Silksong or postpone their launch?

For some, the choice was relatively straightforward. Despite its iconic status, Silksong is an indie game created by a small team, which means its audience is likely to be primarily indie game enthusiasts, especially fans of challenging side-scrolling Metroidvanias. Larger-scale titles, like the atmospheric action-adventure Hell is Us, are expected to withstand any audience shift caused by Silksong, as they have different target demographics. The real impact of this release scramble will likely be felt in the indie game scene, and changes began to surface quickly.

Not long after the announcement, role-playing game Demonschool and walking simulator Baby Steps decided to delay their releases by a few weeks. In a similar fashion, the developers of Dorfromantik moved their upcoming game, Star Birds, back slightly as well. Rather than provide an exhaustive list of each delayed game, I’ve compiled a summary reflecting the shifts observed in the 2025 release schedule, which revealed more movement than anticipated.

Here are the games that have adjusted their release dates:

  • Lord Ambermaze: moved from September 2nd to September 17th
  • Demonschool: shifted from September 3rd to November 19th
  • Comfy Girl: now set for October 8th rather than September 3rd
  • CloverPit: delayed from September 3rd to September 26th
  • Kejora: postponed from September 4th to January 2026
  • Star Birds: rescheduled from September 4th to September 10th
  • Little Witch in the Woods: moved to September 15th from September 4th
  • Moros Protocol: now launching on September 18th instead of September 4th
  • Baby Steps: delayed from September 8th to September 23rd
  • Faeland: delayed from September 9th to a date to be confirmed
  • Aeterna Lucis: postponed from September 18th to 2026
  • Megabonk: rescheduled to September 18th

In contrast, some games have chosen to stick with their original launch dates:

  • Metal Eden: September 2nd
  • Hirogami: September 3rd
  • Jotunnslayer 1.0: September 3rd
  • Adventure of Samsara: September 4th
  • Hell is Us: September 4th
  • Jetrunner: September 4th
  • Fling to the Finish: still set for September 4th
  • Everybody’s Golf Hot Shots: September 4th
  • Dark Deity 2 on Switch 2: September 4th
  • Cronos: The New Dawn: September 5th
  • Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion: September 5th
  • Shuten Order: September 5th

I’ll continue to update this list as more release date changes occur. How about you? Did the announcement of Silksong’s release date impact your gaming plans? Are you looking forward to playing it, or are you indifferent?
