More than 75% of Cyberpunk 2077's sales on Nintendo Switch 2 were in physical copies

Earlier this year, CD Projekt Red revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 would be available at the launch of the Switch 2. The studio committed to providing a physical game cartridge for purchase, which would include the game itself.

This choice set CD Projekt apart from many other third-party developers, who typically preferred using ‘key cards’ for their Switch 2 titles. These key cards do not actually include the game data; instead, they prompt users to download the game from the Nintendo eShop when inserted into the console.

This strategy has proven successful. Recently, CD Projekt published its financial results, indicating that the Switch 2 community has a strong preference for physical media. During June, more than 75 percent of Cyberpunk 2077 sales for the Switch 2 were of the physical version.

In contrast, only 24.6 percent of the game sales for the Switch 2 were digital. While specific sales figures for Cyberpunk 2077 remain undisclosed, reports from June indicated that it was the top-selling third-party game at the Switch 2’s launch, performing well on the new console.

Before the game’s release on Switch 2, Jan Rosner, CD Projekt’s VP of business development, emphasized that offering Cyberpunk 2077 as a “cartridge with a plug-and-play experience” was the right decision. He remarked on the importance of physical games for Nintendo’s audience, advising developers not to underestimate this market.

CD Projekt is not alone in supporting this approach. Earlier this year, Sega announced that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds would also be released with the full game available on the Switch 2 cartridge.
