Witcher creator reveals that a major plot element from the games originates from an error, yet "video game fans have held onto this notion with impressive persistence

Andrzej Sapkowski, the creator of The Witcher series, recently shared his thoughts regarding a significant plot element in the video games that originated from a mistake in his novels. He expressed that this detail has been embraced by fans of the games with surprising intensity.

During a recent AMA on Reddit, Sapkowski was asked about the various Witcher schools introduced in the games. He explained that the concept of “witcher schools” deserved a more elaborate discussion. He recalled a single line referencing a “school of the Wolf” from his book The Last Wish, which he later regretted, calling it narratively incorrect and potentially harmful to the story. Consequently, he chose not to mention any other witcher factions in his later works.

Sapkowski highlighted how that one phrase sparked widespread interest, particularly among game developers, who expanded on the concept and introduced various witcher schools, a move he considers unnecessary.

He shared that he feels uncertain about how to address this situation moving forward. One option could be to remove that sentence from future editions of The Last Wish. Alternatively, he mentioned the possibility of exploring the significance of witcher medallions and their ties to specific characters in his future books. “The possibilities are vast,” he noted.

As for the Witcher schools, they seem integral to the upcoming game, The Witcher 4. The initial teaser featured an image of a medallion, which was later identified as resembling a lynx, leading fans to speculate about a new Witcher school focusing on Ciri.

Sapkowski was also asked about his feelings on adaptations of his work, including the games and the Netflix series. He maintains that adaptations are intrinsically inferior. He articulated that there is a clear distinction between the original literary work and its adaptations, as they cannot fully converge. “The original and its adaptations exist independently,” he said, emphasizing that the power of the written word surpasses visual interpretations.

In another insight, Sapkowski mentioned that he does not frequently listen to “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” because he is not particularly affected by music, and he also revealed that his favorite dinosaur is a Pterodactyl.

Earlier this year, a technology demo for The Witcher 4 was presented during the State of Unreal stream, although CD Projekt Red clarified that it was only a technical showcase and not a representation of the final product.
