Amazon to Introduce a Fully Revamped Luna Streaming Service This Year, Focusing on Social Gaming

Amazon is set to unveil a completely overhauled version of its Luna game streaming service later this year, which will be included in the existing Amazon Prime subscription without any extra charges.

The revamped service aims to provide an expanding collection of blockbuster, classic, and indie titles, alongside social games available through its new GameNight hub. These social games allow players to participate without a controller; instead, they can join via their smartphones using a QR code, similar to the Jackbox Games experience.

GameNight will showcase unique family-friendly titles created by Amazon, launching with over 25 games, including GameNight-optimized adaptations of popular games like Angry Birds and Exploding Kittens, as well as various board game versions.

One of the first exclusive titles will be Courtroom Chaos: Starring Snoop Dogg, featuring an AI-generated version of the artist. It’s essential to note that Snoop Dogg has recently faced backlash for his comments regarding LGBT+ representation in children’s content.

Moreover, Luna will boast a continually expanding library of over 50 popular games; however, access to the full collection will require a separate Luna Premium subscription. This library will feature titles such as Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and Dave the Diver.

Luna will remain accessible without the need for a PC or console. Games will be streamed through a Fire TV, smart TV, or tablet, and any Bluetooth controller will be compatible, although Amazon will also continue to offer its dedicated Luna controller.

Jeff Gattis, the general manager of Luna, expressed in a recent blog post, “With advances in AI and cloud technology, we see opportunities to create completely new types of games—experiences that have never been possible before. We have an incredible pipeline of games in the works, and we can’t wait for you to experience the all-new Luna yourself later this year.”

Amazon initially launched Luna in the UK in 2023, but it has struggled to make a significant impact, as acknowledged by former Amazon Games head Ethan Evans earlier this year, who noted the challenges of competing with Valve’s Steam platform.

This forthcoming update represents a sort of relaunch for Amazon, with the addition of GameNight emphasizing a stronger focus on social gaming.

Gattis stated, “Gaming hardware is too expensive. Games can be intimidating and difficult to learn, not to mention pricey. They can also feel isolating. However, our Prime members believe that gaming should be about bringing friends and family together, fostering connections, and having fun!
