Mortal Kombat 2 movie shifts its release date a week in May to avoid conflict with The Mandalorian

The highly anticipated action film, Mortal Kombat 2, inspired by the iconic and brutal video game franchise, is set to debut a week earlier than originally scheduled. Fans can now look forward to its release on May 8th.

Initially, the film was slated for a May 15th release. This date faced minimal competition, primarily from the comedy Poetic License and the stage adaptation Is God Is. However, by moving the release up by a week, Mortal Kombat 2 strategically avoids competition with The Mandalorian and Grogu, which could potentially attract a significant portion of the audience from May 22nd onward.

With the new release date, the only contenders for box office attention for Mortal Kombat 2 on the first weekend will be films left over from May 1st, including The Devil Wears Prada 2 and an animated children’s film titled Animal Friends, featuring Ryan Reynolds. These films are likely to draw a different demographic.

In August, the release of Mortal Kombat 2 was postponed to 2026, disappointing fans who were looking forward to the film’s original debut on October 24th. Jeremy Slater, known for his work on the critically acclaimed Moon Knight series, is writing the screenplay for this latest installment. The film features Karl Urban in the role of Johnny Cage, following his notable performance as Billy Butcher in The Boys. Urban also portrayed Judge Dredd in the acclaimed 2012 film Dredd, which remains a favorite among many viewers.
