Microsoft raises development kit prices, making Xbox more costly for developers
Microsoft has raised the price of its Xbox Development Kit, making it costlier for game developers creating titles for their console.
The cost of the development kit has risen from $1,500 to $2,000, marking a significant 30% increase. In a statement to developers, Microsoft explained, “The adjustment reflects macroeconomic developments. We remain dedicated to providing high-quality tools and support for your development efforts.”
This price increase is effective immediately and will impact developers not only in the United States but also in Europe and beyond. The rise in costs follows earlier price hikes for both Xbox consoles and the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription service.
As of October 3rd, the prices of the Xbox Series X and S in the US increased, with the disc-based Series X now priced at $649.99, which is a $50 rise. Additionally, Game Pass Ultimate saw an increase of over 50%, with the monthly fee in the UK now at £22.99. It’s worth noting that while this is the premium tier of the subscription service, the PC Game Pass has also seen a price increase, although some regions are still awaiting these changes.
The Xbox Development Kit is already considered pricey due to the extra hardware required for developers to test their games on both the Series X and S consoles.
This announcement comes on the heels of Microsoft’s increased profits, as noted in their earnings report from July, which highlighted record revenues from subscriptions, largely attributed to Game Pass. CEO Satya Nadella stated that “Microsoft is thriving,” despite recent layoffs within the company.
