Struggling PlayStation 3 - PS5 Surpasses Its Total US Sales

The PlayStation 5 has officially surpassed the PlayStation 3 in sales within the United States, achieving this milestone in just under five years since its launch on November 12, 2020. This notable achievement was highlighted by analyst Mat Piscatella, who shared the information during the sales analysis for September.

According to Piscatella, “As of September 2025, the PS5 has overtaken the PS3 in terms of lifetime unit sales in the US,” and he expressed his enthusiasm for this development. Although specific sales figures were not disclosed, he noted that the PS5 is consistently outperforming the PS4 on a similar timeline basis in the US, with a reported increase of 4.6% compared to its predecessor.

To provide some context, Sony’s business reports indicate that the PS4 achieved lifetime sales of over 113.5 million units by September 2020, the PS3 totaled more than 87.4 million units as of March 2017, and the PS2, the company’s best-seller, reached over 160 million units as of March 2012. However, it’s important to note that these figures have likely changed since the dates were recorded.

In August, Sony revealed that total PS5 sales had reached 80.3 million units, indicating that its sales trajectory has been consistent with that of the PS4 for a considerable period. The company plans to release its next financial results on November 11.

Looking ahead, Sony anticipates a slowdown in PS5 sales, citing the potential peak in console sales along with current economic challenges and tariffs affecting the market. This has led to unprecedented pricing for consoles in this generation.

As the industry evolves, the implications for the future of console development remain uncertain, suggesting that the role of gaming consoles may be on the cusp of transformation.
