Pokémon Legends: Z-A outsold Pokémon X/Y in just one week, reaching 5.8 million copies, with about half on Switch 2

Pokémon Legends: Z-A has achieved impressive sales figures, moving 5.8 million copies within its first week, as reported on the official Pokémon Company site. Approximately half of these sales were made on the new Switch 2, encompassing both physical and digital formats. This milestone positions it among the top-selling Pokémon games in terms of initial week performance.

Despite its success, accolades from video game sales analyst Pierre485 indicate that Z-A still trails behind titles such as Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, and Pokémon Sword/Shield for first-week sales figures. Nonetheless, it has already outperformed earlier entries like Pokémon X/Y and Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A launched alongside a special hardware bundle for the Switch 2, announced earlier this year in July. The Switch 2 version promotes enhanced graphics and improved frame rates, with an option for existing Switch owners to upgrade their copies through a designated upgrade pack.

The game makes a notable return of Mega Evolutions to the franchise and introduces a new arena-style 3D battle system, allowing Pokémon to maneuver during combat, representing a significant evolution from traditional turn-based gameplay. Additionally, players now face a heightened level of risk, as Pokémon can be knocked out during battles.

In a three-star review, a gaming critic provided insights on the game, mentioning that Lumiose City may need some improvements but praised Pokémon Legends: Z-A for its more concentrated narrative and whimsical elements, marking a refreshing return to form by modern Pokémon standards.
