Unseen top-down horror Darkwood receives a sequel and introduces an unexpected new developer
A sequel to the eerie top-down horror game Darkwood is in the works, and there’s an unexpected new developer on board. The original creator, Acid Wizard, along with publisher Hooded Horse, has enlisted Ice-Pick Lodge, known for their work on Pathologic, to develop the new title.
While Acid Wizard remains actively involved as the intellectual property holder, they will also provide oversight and consultation throughout the game’s development process.
The upcoming sequel, titled Darkwood 2, takes the chilling experience from its dark forest setting to the stark, arid landscape of a dying sea. Players can expect to explore vast deserts, murky marshes, and deeper waters where untold threats may be lurking. This shift in environment promises fresh visuals and new terrifying creatures, giving players even more motivation to fortify their defenses and survive through the night.
Though Darkwood initially appeared to be a simple and unassuming game, its top-down perspective cleverly concealed its menacing nature. The game’s unique approach to line of sight kept players on edge, revealing unsettling surprises, and its dark themes quickly became apparent. The objective was to survive long enough to uncover the mysteries of the world, all while navigating a surreal, dream-like environment filled with the constant dangers that arise after sunset.
Ice-Pick Lodge, with its wealth of experience from the challenging Pathologic series, makes for an intriguing development partnership.
Darkwood 2 is currently in development for PC and is expected to be available on PC Game Pass as well.
