Insights Extracted from Set Photos: What They Reveal About the Legend of Zelda Movie Beyond Nintendo’s Commentary – Analysis
Today, the first official images from the live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda have been revealed on the Nintendo Today app.
The photos feature Bo Bragason embodying Princess Zelda, equipped with a bow and arrow, alongside Benjamin Evan Ainsworth portraying Link. Viewers are treated to shots of the two characters gazing over Hyrule, as well as solo portraits of each.
Ever since footage from the filming of the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie surfaced over the weekend, I’ve been piecing together clues regarding which installment of the franchise the movie might be based on. Here’s my analysis.
The images above showcase Bo Bragason as Zelda, notably dressed in a blue tunic. This detail suggests that the film could fall within the timeline of Breath of the Wild, where various characters, including the princess, donned similar blue attire. Additionally, Bragason’s hairstyle is very reminiscent of the style seen in Breath of the Wild.
Following Zelda’s appearance in the footage, she approaches another character beside a horse. Many people speculate that this character is Impa, a regular figure in the Zelda franchise. However, this depiction of Impa appears much younger than her portrayal in Breath of the Wild, even with her silver hair, and she dons a more knightly outfit. This leads me to believe that the film might lean toward the storyline of Ocarina of Time, where Impa serves as a valiant warrior.
Some have noted that the actress likely portraying Impa bears a striking resemblance to the version seen in Skyward Sword, which is considered the origin of the entire Zelda timeline. Although the actress has yet to be officially confirmed, she appears to be Dichen Lachman. I first encountered Lachman in the show Neighbours as Katya Kinski, but she has also appeared in titles such as Severance and Altered Carbon.
Interestingly, it seems that Link does not have the Master Sword in any of the images from the set. Could the quest to find the legendary sword be part of the storyline?
So, what can we infer from all this? Honestly, I’m not entirely sure which installment of the Zelda franchise the film will adapt, even though my initial assumption leaned toward Breath of the Wild.
It’s possible that the filmmakers could take a creative approach similar to Sony’s Uncharted adaptation, blending iconic moments from various Zelda titles. Alternatively, they might introduce a completely original storyline. What elements are you hoping to see when the film is finally released?
Filming for the Legend of Zelda adaptation began earlier this month in New Zealand and is slated to continue until April next year, with a release date set for May 7, 2027.
I’ll be keeping an eye out for more updates and casting announcements, particularly regarding who will portray Ganondorf.
