AI-Driven Inferno Unveils Extensive Use of Generative AI in Let it Die Sequel
Let it Die: Inferno, the anticipated sequel to the eccentric 2016 title Let it Die, is set to be released on December 4th. This new installment appears to incorporate a significant amount of generative AI technology in its development.
Developed by Supertrick Games, the same team behind the original, Let it Die: Inferno combines elements of action, base infiltration, and asymmetric multiplayer gameplay. Unlike its predecessor, which saw a purely multiplayer follow-up that didn’t perform well, this new title is taking a different direction with an emphasis on PvEvP, which allows for real-time multiplayer interactions.
The game’s Steam page reveals that various components such as in-game voices, music, and graphics have been generated using AI, and subsequently refined by their development team. This includes textures for background environments, illustrations, infocast videos, and audio elements, indicating a potentially extensive use of AI across multiple aspects of the game.
Despite being announced only a couple of months ago during a PlayStation State of Play event, the marketing for Let it Die: Inferno has been minimal. This might suggest a rapid development cycle, one that could be expedited through the assistance of AI.
Without Steam’s policy requiring disclosure about AI usage, it’s likely that players wouldn’t have learned about its implementation until after they experienced the game. This transparency can benefit consumers who take such information into account when making purchases. However, not everyone believes such disclosures are necessary; industry figures like Epic Games’ CEO Tim Sweeney argue that the prevalence of AI in game development makes individual disclosures less meaningful. How this impacts consumer choices remains to be seen.
