Helldivers 2’s Biggest Fan Film Debuts Today, with Arrowhead Eagerly Anticipating It
Today marks the premiere of the highly anticipated fan film “For Liberty,” set in the universe of Helldivers 2. Produced by the volunteer team at the YouTube channel Plot Coalition, this fan project boasts a runtime of nearly an hour, making it the longest Helldivers fan film to date.
Although the film isn’t officially affiliated with Sony or Arrowhead Studios, it has generated significant excitement among the Helldivers community. The latest trailer has quickly gained almost 300,000 views in just over a month.
Rendered in the distinctive animation style of Helldivers, the film chronicles the adventures of courageous Super Earth soldiers as they traverse the perilous galaxy featured in the beloved third-person shooter. The project also includes complete voice acting, with six talented actors participating.
Kevin Lauer, one of the voice actors, recently shared his insights about “For Liberty.” A newcomer to the Helldivers franchise, he had previously worked on Plot Coalition’s Titanfall series. After immersing himself in the game to prepare for his role, Lauer quickly grasped the unique charm and appeal of the Helldivers universe.
“I only started playing Helldivers when it launched on Xbox earlier this year, so at first, I was guided by the director,” Lauer explained. “Once I played the game, everything clicked, and I understood the references!”
Lauer emphasized that the fan film stays true to the game’s essence. “It’s quite accurate and not as comedic as some might think. There are three trailers: one conveys a sense of liberty and democracy, another is more serious and dark, while the last finds a balance. It does incorporate humor, and I believe there are many recognizable elements for fans. This project is created by devoted Helldivers enthusiasts, which will certainly be evident.”
In the film, Lauer voices the Veteran, a representative of the idealized ‘John Helldiver,’ symbolizing the spirit of fighting for Super Earth. He noted that the community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive.
<p"I've been involved in content creation for a while, so I'm accustomed to negativity, but this time it's been exceptionally rare. People are either excited or inquiring about the film's length (laughs). Overall, it's been very well-received, and no fan project has achieved this scale before," Lauer remarked.
Interestingly, Arrowhead Studios is even hosting a watch party for the film’s release. Lauer mentioned, “After the first trailer was unveiled a few months back, they reached out and expressed their enthusiasm. I’ve heard they’ll be holding a watch party, which shows how engaged the developers are with the community.”
This enthusiasm raises an intriguing question: what makes Helldivers 2 such fertile ground for fan-driven creations? While “For Liberty” may be the largest fan film, it is by no means the only creative endeavor related to Helldivers. Lauer believes the answer lies in the game’s community spirit.
<p"As a new fan, I've realized that everyone shares in the humor and camaraderie—everyone seems a bit 'brainwashed,'" Lauer concluded. "In-game, if a friend criticizes something, I’ll jokingly shoot them as a playful reminder not to question democracy. It’s just a fun, uncomplicated game that fills the need for cooperative play. It's wild, entertaining, and allows for some absurd moments!"
Helldivers 2 continues to enjoy a surge in popularity, engaging its loyal fanbase with frequent updates and an active Galactic War across multiple fronts. One of its standout features is the freedom it provides players to craft their own narratives, a point emphasized by director Johan Pilestadt during a recent event discussing the game’s evolution.
