Fans of the popular Death Note manga and anime may soon see a new video game dedicated to this cult universe. According to the Taiwan Digital Game Evaluation Committee, an unannounced game called Death Note: Shadow Mission has been evaluated for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 platforms. The publisher is Bandai Namco, which is known for its involvement in the development and release of many successful games.

Reportedly, this entry on the rating board was one of the first public signals about the appearance of a game in the Death Note universe. The publisher Bandai Namco has not yet officially announced the project. However, the fact that the game was submitted for evaluation significantly increases the likelihood of its release. Previously, in June, manga publisher Shueisha applied for the registration of the Death Note: Killer Within trademark in Europe, Japan, and the United States. This also sparked rumours about the possible appearance of a new game.

The plot of Death Note

Death Note is one of the most influential manga of its time, which was published from 2003 to 2006. The story revolves around a young genius named Light Yagami, who finds a notebook that belonged to the god of death named Ryuk. This notebook gives Light the power to kill anyone whose name he writes on the pages. Using this power, Light seeks to create an ‘ideal world’ free of criminals. Thus begins the story of the confrontation between Yagami Light and a brilliant detective named Al, who suspects him of murder.

The popularity of Death Note has spread far beyond the manga. As a result, an anime series, several Japanese films, and an American adaptation by Netflix in 2017 were created. In 2022, Netflix announced plans to create another manga adaptation in the format of a series by the Duffer brothers. Previously, Konami also released three games for the Nintendo DS, which were successful among gamers.

Will a new game released

Information from the rating board is not an official confirmation that Death Note: Shadow Mission is ready for release. However, it is a clear indication that work on the project is ongoing. Almost 20 years after the original manga was finished, the interest in Death Note hasn’t changed at all. This gives every reason to expect a new exciting game in the universe of this franchise.
