New reports about the development of the next big Battlefield game suggest that the new title will include a form of the Battlefield Portal mode. First introduced for Battlefield 2042, the Battlefield Portal mode allowed players to create their own games with weapons, vehicles, and even maps and mechanics from across the Battlefield franchise, reported by GameRant.
EA Games is hard at work on the next Battlefield game, though it has yet to publicly announce details about its theme or even its title. The previous title, Battlefield 2042, was heavily criticized upon its launch in 2021. It suffered from technical issues and unpopular twists in the game’s design. The game’s reputation has recovered over the years thanks to persistent efforts and updates from developers DICE and Criterion Games, but it’s time for a new Battlefield game.
The Next Battlefield Game
Now, EA seems ready to talk more publicly about the game. It first introduced Battlefield Labs, a new version of the Battlefield Community Testing Environment. It was last seen in Battlefield in 2016. EA Battlefield Labs also hinted that one of the best features from Battlefield 2042 could be making its way into the new game.
The developers have confirmed that Battlefield Portal will be included in the next title. While it wasn’t unexpected that Battlefield Portal would be moving into a new game, it’s surprising to get confirmation so early. The next Battlefield game is still in pre-alpha development, and the full game isn’t likely to hit the market until 2026.

Battlefield Portal: A Player Favorite
Each Battlefield game has had its own theme and setting that served as the basis for its weapons, gameplay, and maps. Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 5 used World War II as their setting, while 2042 and 2142 moved to the near future to add a bit of science fiction to the conflict. Battlefield Portal, on the other hand, allowed players to traverse time and space to play through custom game modes and maps that utilized weapons, mechanics, and vehicles from across the franchise. Players eagerly embraced the challenge, creating everything from challenges to an incredible custom mode inspired by Battlefield: Vietnam.
While Battlefield 2042 itself has always been met with mixed reviews, Battlefield Portal has proven to be one of the game’s most beloved aspects. Many Battlefield fans have a special attachment to certain settings. The ability to bring old favorites into custom game modes has proven to be a winning formula that reinforces the franchise’s identity. With any luck, the new Battlefield development team will be able to preserve what fans loved most about Battlefield Portal while also pushing the new game forward in interesting ways.
