A new insider report suggests that Rocksteady could be working on a new single-player Batman game following the lukewarm reception of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, reported by GameRant. Rocksteady made a name for itself with the Batman: Arkham series, earning near-universal acclaim for letting players take on the role of the Dark Knight with a level of quality few licensed games had achieved before.

The Arkham series would set the standard for future superhero games, influencing games like Insomniac’s Spider-Man series with its combat, atmosphere, and approach to storytelling that delved deeply into the character’s core concepts while breathing new life into the classic rogues’ gallery.

New Single-Player Batman Game

With 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight serving as a sort of finale to the Batman Arkhamverse saga, Rocksteady has decided to expand on its next DC game with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The open-world, team-based game pitted the reformed villains of Task Force X against Brainiac and his team of brainwashed heroes. However, since launching in early 2024, Suicide Squad has faced a seemingly endless stream of controversy and a lackluster response, ultimately leading Rocksteady to end support for the game a year later.

Now, Rocksteady may be returning to the hero who first brought it success for its next project, according to Jason Schreier’s recent report on the state of WB Games following the departure of former president David Haddad late last month. One of the many claims in the report is that Rocksteady is developing a new single-player Batman game, but it’s reportedly years away from release.

Details of Rocksteady’s potential game remain under wraps

No other details about this mysterious Batman game have been revealed. It’s not even certain whether Rocksteady will set this new project in the Arkhamverse or reboot the series in the vein of WB Montreal’s Gotham Knights, but the former seems more likely given the recent success of Batman: Arkham Shadow in Meta Quest 3.

Batman wasn’t the only DC superhero mentioned in WB Games’ recent report. Monolith’s Wonder Woman game was completely rebooted after a director change early last year, which set the project back significantly. Meanwhile, WB Montreal’s planned Flash game was reportedly canceled due to the failure of 2023’s The Flash, and the studio’s proposal for a John Constantine title never went through.
