The original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is reportedly coming to Xbox Game Pass. The classic shooter is expected to arrive on Microsoft’s subscription service in late winter or early spring, further expanding the Xbox Game Pass Call of Duty catalog, reported by GameRant.

In October 2023, Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. The following July, Xbox Game Pass received its first Call of Duty game, Modern Warfare 3, in 2023. Black Ops 6 followed suit three months later, becoming the first entry in the long-running franchise to be released on day one on the popular subscription service.

Modern Warfare 2 Xbox Game Pass Version May Be Incomplete

Another installment in the series is reportedly now coming to Microsoft’s content catalog, and XboxEra reports that Modern Warfare 2 will soon join Xbox Game Pass, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter. This is the original Modern Warfare 2 from 2009, not to be confused with the 2022 game of the same name. The classic shooter is expected to be available to Microsoft subscribers in March or April 2025.

Neither source has provided any details on the actual content of the game’s supposed Xbox Game Pass version. Activision’s Canadian subsidiary Beenox has already remastered the original Modern Warfare 2 campaign for a 2022 reboot of the same name, but the 2009 shooter’s multiplayer gameplay was not included in the new title. The first MW2 game’s Steam servers were shut down in July 2023 after reports of malware threats. Activision hasn’t reactivated them since, and it’s unclear whether the publisher has any plans to do so. So, even if 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 does indeed make it to Xbox Game Pass, it’s still unclear whether its version of the subscription service will be fully available.

Modern Warfare 2 Could Be the Third Call of Duty Game on Xbox Game Pass

Activision typically announces new Call of Duty games in April or May. So Modern Warfare 2 could hit Xbox Game Pass around the same time as 2025’s Call of Duty, which makes it more likely that both events will happen at the same time. If Microsoft is still deciding between releasing Modern Warfare 2 XGP in March and April 2025, March seems more likely, especially since April is currently looking much busier.

South of Midnight and Clais Obscur: Expedition 33 are scheduled to launch on day one of the service in April, as well as Commandos: Origins. Instead, Xbox Game Pass currently only has one confirmed day one title for March 2025: the survival game Atomfall from Rebellion.
