A remaster of the original God of War saga is rumored to be announced right after PlayStation State of Play. Before Kratos and his son Atreus traversed the Nine Kingdoms, the Ghost of Sparta laid a bloody path of revenge against the gods of ancient Greece in the first three God of War games. The first two installments of this epic saga helped set the standard for modern action games on the PlayStation 2, while the third was a well-received finale (at the time) on the PS3, reported by GameRant.

God of War 3 Remastered Only Without PS Plus Subscription

Due to the lack of backward compatibility with older games on the PS4 and PS5, and because Sony never re-released the first two games after the PS3 era, fans were only able to play 2015’s God of War 3 Remastered on recent PlayStation hardware without a PS Plus subscription. Rumors are swirling that this could soon change, as insiders claim that the original God of War trilogy could be getting a remaster this year to celebrate the franchise’s 20th anniversary.

This would be great news for fans of Kratos’ original Greek saga, and new rumors claim that this updated God of War collection could be confirmed soon. An existing remaster of the old God of War games could be announced during this week’s PlayStation State of Play livestream. It should be noted that there is no known date for this, and that these are all just unconfirmed rumors.

Santa Monica Could Be Working on a God of War Set in Ancient Egypt

Remasters of the old God of War games aren’t the only thing being rumored, as various insiders also believe that Santa Monica Studio is working on a brand new installment set in Ancient Egypt. Other sources say that this rumored God of War game is a prequel to the events of the original trilogy, re-introducing a younger version of Kratos in Greece.

While God of War and God of War Ragnarok are successful and well-received titles in their own right, there are many fans who prefer the older games, most of which weren’t readily available on the two newest PlayStation systems. With the God of War franchise turning 20 this year, and just a day away from the release of the new PlayStation State of Play, the time could be right to unveil a remaster of Kratos’ original saga of bloodshed, revenge, and Greek tragedy.
